About the Japanese Children’s Day

“In Japan, Children’s Day, known as Kodomo no Hi, is a special holiday celebrated annually on May 5th. It is a day dedicated to honoring and celebrating the happiness and well-being of children across the country.

One of the most distinctive features of Children’s Day is the display of koinobori, colorful carp-shaped windsocks, which are flown outside homes and along streets. These carp banners represent strength, courage, and success in life, inspired by the Japanese folktale of a carp swimming upstream to become a dragon.

Families with boys also often display Gogatsu Ningyo, samurai dolls dressed in traditional armor and clothing. These dolls symbolize the hope for boys to grow up strong, healthy, and brave.

On Children’s Day, families come together to enjoy special meals and treats, including mochi rice cakes and chimaki dumplings. It’s a time for parents to express their love and appreciation for their children, and for children to honor their parents and elders.

While Children’s Day has traditionally focused on boys, there is also a separate holiday called Hinamatsuri, or Girls’ Day, celebrated on March 3rd, to honor girls.

Overall, Children’s Day in Japan is a joyous occasion filled with traditions, festivities, and expressions of love and gratitude for the youngest members of society.”
