Simple Present Tense

Positive Form

The positive form of the simple present tense simply states a fact or a habit. It uses the base form of the verb for all subjects except the third person singular (he, she, it), where an -s or -es is added to the verb.

Structure:

  • I/You/We/They – Verb (base form)
  • He/She/It – Verb (base form + s/es)

Examples:

  • “I eat breakfast at 7 AM.”
  • “She reads the newspaper daily.”

Negative Form

The negative form of the simple present tense indicates that an action is not happening. It is formed by adding ‘do not’ or ‘does not’ before the base form of the verb.

Structure:

  • I/You/We/They – Do not + Verb (base form)
  • He/She/It – Does not + Verb (base form)

Examples:

  • “I do not like cold weather.”
  • “He does not play football.”

Questions

Questions in the simple present tense are formed by inverting the subject and the auxiliary verb ‘do/does.’

Structure:

  • Do + I/you/we/they + Verb (base form)?
  • Does + he/she/it + Verb (base form)?

Examples:

  • “Do you speak English?”
  • “Does it rain often here?”
